Campaign Monitor’s easy to use, uncomplicated interface gets you up and running on your campaign in record time. If you can live with the provided templates and know some amount of HTML you can either customize it yourself or use the built-in WYSIWIG editor to make basic changes.
What we liked: This is one of the few ESPs that provide fall back text for personalization, which helps you avoid embarrassment like your subject line showing up “Special Offer for , Get 20% off!”. The campaign comparison allows you to select multiple campaigns and view comparative opens, clicks, and other parameters in a graphical format. This will allow you to zero on your better campaigns much faster than you if you were staring at just the numbers. The A/B Split testing gives a near real time view of how your campaign is performing and the slider controls make it a cinch to adjust the test. The system automatically tracks the winner and mails that to the rest of your recipient list. You will need a big list to ensure statistical significance.
What we didn’t like: The spam checker is behind a pay wall along with an email inbox client tester. The extra dollars for testing is worth the money but you won’t need to use it every time. Customizing the template requires some amount of technical savvy. The available templates need to be modified offline or downloaded and then uploaded for basic editing in the WYSIWYG editor - an unnecessary step. There is also no way you can directly work on the html code, so you need to make sure it’s perfectly rendered first before uploading it. Setting up email authentication (SPF, DomainKeys, SenderID) requires you to modify the DNS settings on your webhost (a dangerous task only an experienced person should attempt, since a DNS mistake can take your entire site off the web) … but enabling authentication may help increase your deliverability rates.
In summary: Ideal for one-off campaigns or to get up and running quickly. Easy to use with its smooth interface and meaningful graphical comparisons. No auto-responder or conversion tracking. Customising templates will require some technical savvy. Overall, we give Campaign Monitor 4 stars.
